What’s Happening at Kireka Home

At Kireka Home, we care for and educate children with a wide range of special needs and developmental challenges. Many of our learners require regular medical attention, therapy sessions, specialist appointments, and emergency healthcare services. Yet one major challenge continues to hinder our ability to provide timely care: the lack of a dedicated school ambulance.

For over four decades, Kireka Home has stood as a beacon of hope, compassion, and opportunity for children with special needs in Uganda. Located in Kireka, just outside Kampala, the institution has dedicated itself to providing a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment for children living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

As part of its RoundUp prggram, Carrefour Uganda contributed renovated classrooms and dining halls to schools supporting children with special needs.

Seven rotary clubs have united to construct walkways, provide more water tanks, market products made by children, provide drugs and construct protective ridges along the verandas.

Gone are the days when children with special needs would be abandoned in homes as their siblings go through school. At Kireka Home for Children with Special Educational Needs, children go through vocational to help them be self-reliant.

A Refuge for Children with Disabilities looks at how children with disabilities in Uganda are perceived and explores how one school, the Kireka Home, addresses this.
