Kireka Home for Children with Special Needs has been a place of warmth, learning, and belonging since 1984. Located in Kireka, just outside Kampala, we are one of Uganda’s longest-serving institutions dedicated to the care and education of children living with intellectual and developmental challenges.
We are a residential school — a home as much as a classroom. Our students come from across Uganda and beyond, many referred because their families have limited access to the specialized support they need.
No two children at Kireka Home are the same. Our students arrive with different backgrounds, different abilities, and different needs — and our approach reflects that reality. We work with individual attention and structured routines, balanced with the freedom to play, explore, and simply be children.
Our teachers and caregivers are trained to build on each student’s strengths. Progress here is not measured against a standard — it is measured against each child’s own journey. A student who learns to communicate a need, dress independently, or make a friend has achieved something worth celebrating.
To provide a nurturing home and quality specialized education for children with intellectual and developmental challenges — empowering each child to grow, learn, and participate fully in the community around them. Every child who walks through our doors deserves care, dignity, and the chance to thrive.
A Uganda where every child with a special needs is seen, valued, and given the tools to live with independence and dignity — and where no family ever has to face that journey alone.
The children at Kireka Home come from every corner of Uganda — referred by hospitals, welfare offices, and families who have spent years searching for a place equipped to meet their child’s needs. Many arrive having experienced isolation or limited opportunity. What they find here is a community of peers who understand them, staff who champion them, and a place where they truly belong.
Kireka Home is sustained by a wide circle of support — from corporate partners and international organizations to individual donors and the families of our students. Together, this community shares one conviction: that every child, regardless of ability, deserves a full and dignified life. We welcome all who share that belief to stand with us.
